Elizabeth Marie Barber

Elizabeth Marie Barber, 60, passed away Saturday, Aug. 24, 2019, at UVHN-CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh, surrounded by family and friends. She was born in Plattsburgh on March 27, 1959, to George J. and Elizabeth (Mulligan) Barber.
Marie earned a bachelor's degree in Theatre from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1982. She worked in theaters, costume shops, tailors, and fabric stores in Maryland; Albany, and Plattsburgh. She returned to SUNY Plattsburgh in 1996 where she was the resident Costumer. She designed main stage productions as well as other theater productions and maintained an extensive collection of costumes used by the theater department as well as drama clubs in schools around the region. She taught countless students the arts of costume design, pattern-making and construction. She retired from SUNY Plattsburgh in January 2019. For many years she also worked at the North Country Food Co-op. For the past 35 years, Marie's faith and devotion as a Jehovah's Witness was a significant part of her life and gave her both strength and hope.
Marie was creative virtually every waking hour: always sewing, crocheting, knitting, drawing, and any other craft she could explore. She played many musical instruments, was a fabulous cook, and an excellent story-teller.
Marie is survived by her siblings: Eileen (Peter) Allen of Cumberland Head, Thomas of Plattsburgh, David (Ann) of Plattsburgh, and James (Carol) of Ballston Spa. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Helen. Although Marie did not have children of her own, she was the 'adopted mom' to many in the community. She was outgoing, compassionate, kind, witty, generous, and creative, and inspired these traits in all who met her.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life at the Holiday Inn in Plattsburgh on Sept. 7, 2019. The service will begin at 3 p.m. followed by a reception and light refreshments. In honor of Marie, we ask that you give a loved one a hug, invite someone new to your tea party, sing a wee song, and embrace your creativity.

I had the very great pleasure of Marie staying with us when our congregations were involved with the Esther drama! Wow such talent, Marie would stay up for hours into early morning to finish the beautiful costumes she was making! I am grateful to Jehovah that we had a chat at our RC this past July! She was in pain yet not a negative word was spoken, she only wanted to make all three days of her spiritual feast! I watched her from my seat with joy, for the complete faith, trust and thankfulness she had for her God Jehovah! Today is one day closer to when we will all see her again in the Paradise she so believed in!❤️

Oh Marie you’ve left such an impression on hundreds of people. I am so very sad you have left us much too soon. You were so brave and fought very hard. We will always remember your kind ways, friendly face, artistic abilities and famous swear jar. Your SUNY Theatre family will never forget the compassion you had for your work and support to tons of students. I’m sorry I didn’t get to visit more with you but treasure the lunch and visits I did get in. 😢💖

Marie was an amazing woman and a wonderful friend. She never wanted recognition for her actions. She gave part of herself to everyone she knew. She leaves a great hole in our congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and a hole in my heart.
