Eleanor (Galvin) Place, 97, of the Felton Road, Peru, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at the UVM Health Network, CVPH, surrounded by her family's love.
Eleanor was born in Salisbury, Vt., March 7, 1920, the daughter of George and Florence (Gale) Galvin. She received her teaching degree from Caselton State College in 1941 and taught in Fernville and Winooski, Vt.
In 1942, while working at a summer job in Chazy, she met the love of her life. She married Kenneth R. Place at her parent's home on June 20, 1944; their marriage lasted 63 years. After their marriage, Eleanor continued teaching Religious Education at Peru Central School. Together they raised their family on the Place farm in Peru, N.Y.
Eleanor was the bookkeeper at G.W. Parker Ford in Peru for 20 years. She was active in the Peru Community Church as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Ladies Guild and Elder. She also was a 4-H leader where she enjoyed sharing her love of sewing and cooking. In later years, Ken and Eleanor joined North Country Square Dancers and loved making new friends.
Eleanor's greatest joy for every minute of her 97 years was her family. She is survived by her son Alan (Peggy) of Culpeper, Va., and her daughter Elaine of Lyons Falls, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Jeffrey Place (Jennifer) of Windsor, Colo., David Place (Jodi) of Culpeper, Va., Karen Redding (Bryan) of Athens, Ga., and Matthew Place (Julie) of Melbourne, Fla. Eleanor was also greatly loved and admired by her step grandchildren, Meg Thompson (Robert) of Richmond, Va., Billy Frederick (Sarah) of Culpeper, Va., Greg Frederick (Megan) of Culpeper, Va., and Beth Sewell of Richmond, Va. Eleanor was richly blessed with 8 great-grandchildren, and one expected in January. Also surviving Eleanor are three sisters, Marjorie Galvin of Bennington, Vt., Josephine Haines of Williston, Vt., and June Lucia of South Windsor, Conn. Aunt Eleanor was also loved by many, many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband; parents, in-laws; two sisters, Laura and Elizabeth; and two brothers, Stan and Ellsworth.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Hamilton Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the spring in God's Acre Cemetery in Peru.
Donations in her memory may be made the Peru Community Church or the Peru Rescue Squad.
