Doris's Story

Doris Anita Walsh passed away peacefully on March 31, 2017, at the University of Vermont Health Network CVPH. She was born in Parsippany, N.J., on July 27, 1923, and spent her life in Boonton, N.J., before marrying Edmund Walsh on March 19, 1945. They settled in Madison, N.J., where they raised nine children before moving to the North Country in 1980.
Doris was the daughter of Arthur and Elisabeth Bertell, Swedish-Finn immigrants. She was one of five children, with siblings Arthur, Elspeth, Svea, and Gladys. Doris was very proud of her heritage and especially enjoyed hosting Christmas celebrations with many Scandinavian traditions, decorations, and foods. Doris enjoyed baking, crafts, refinishing furniture, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She was known as a very sweet and spiritual person, strong in her faith and love of God.
Doris was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her large family: Kathleen Walsh of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Karen (Erik) Hewitt of Hillsville, Va., Maureen Robinson of Chazy, N.Y., Keith (Molly) Walsh of Shelburne, Vt., Joseph (Sandy) Walsh of West Chazy, N.Y., John (Marianne) Walsh of Aptos, Calif., Janet Walsh of Seattle, Wash., Daniel (Sherie) Walsh of Sacramento, Calif.; 15 grandchildren: Leif Hewitt, Katrina (Chad) Southard, Kellen (Jennifer) Walsh,  Michael (Nicholas Muellner) Robinson, Kayleen
(Wes)  Udwin, Sarah (Warren) Cramer, Justin Walsh, Mari Walsh, Eric Dunn Walsh, Freya Helton, Matthew Helton, Siena Walsh, Kayda Walsh, Briar Walsh, and Marin Walsh. Also missing Doris will be her brother- in-law, Robert Thode of Tennessee, many nieces and nephews and her "honorary son" John Grounard of Madison, N.J.
Doris was predeceased by her husband Edmund in 1984, her son, Navy Commander Rev. Michael Walsh in 2007, her son-in-law, Thomas Robinson in 2001, as well as her brother and three sisters.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 7,
at St. John's Church. Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 8, in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Dannemora.
