Donald E. "Whit" Whitaker, 80, of Smart Street, Keeseville, passed away on Christmas Eve, 2017, at Meadowbrook Healthcare in Plattsburgh.
He was born in Tempe, Ariz., May 11, 1937, the son of George and Elizabeth (Ketchum) Whitaker.
Whit served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1966. He was in active duty during the Vietnam engagement.
After his military service, Whit worked four years as a butcher at Booths Meat Market in Keeseville, where his duties also included hand-feeding a pet leopard. He also worked at Dinatale Construction and later at Torrington Construction where he was an accomplished heavy equipment operator. He retired from Graymont Industries in 2003.
As a young man he was a 32nd degree Mason.
Whit enjoyed hunting, working on his '52 Chevy, riding motorcycles, sketching and leatherworking.
Left to cherish the memory of Whit are, his loving wife of 51 years, Teresa Whitaker, whom he married Sept. 17, 1966; his children, Glenn and his wife Roberta Fredenburg of Chazy and their children, Mary Fredenburg, Colin, Kyle and Connor McCarthy; Dale Fredenburg and his significant other Carrie Hutter of Plattsburgh and Dale's children, Zachary and his wife Melinda Fredenburg and their children Mark and Edith; Nicholas Fredenburg and his fiancee, Jess Marcotte and their child Nicolette; and Theo Whitaker and his wife Kim of Ohio and their son Cooper.
Whit is also survived by his brother Elbert and his wife Kieko of California and his half-sister Steva Whitaker; and multiple nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his son, Dennis Whitaker; his parents; his sister Stella and her husband Bob Talley, and his sister Dorothy and her husband Joe E. Neuman. He was also predeceased by his half-sister Barbara Whitaker.
Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Donations in his memory may be made to the family or to the Keeseville Volunteer Fire Department.
