Debra L. "Debbie" Bordeaux - 64, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her family at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Friday morning, Sept. 7, 2018. Born in Montpelier on Nov. 20, 1953, she was the daughter of Elizabeth (Harrington) Bordeaux and the late Robert E. Bordeaux Sr. Debbie was previously married to John Provencher.
Debbie was born with cerebral palsy and despite her disability, she achieved and advocated throughout her life. She received her early education at the Vermont Achievement Center in Rutland, until the law was passed to allow disabled persons to be mainstreamed into the Burlington school district, and then attended Burlington High School, graduating in 1973. She continued her education at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies. As a child, she very much enjoyed her summer months attending Camp Thorpe in Goshen, Vt.
Following school, Debbie worked for the Vermont Center for Independent Living in Montpelier as an administrative assistant. In addition, she worked tirelessly as an advocate for people with disabilities making sure that individuals had the services and equipment they needed.
Debbie was a 43-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Temple 75 of Williston and a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Essex Junction. In her leisure time she enjoyed collecting music boxes and teddy bears, crocheting, latch hook and reading.
Debbie is survived by her mother, Elizabeth Bordeaux of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, her twin Diana Moquin and her husband Davis of Peru, N.Y., Annette Litchfield of Waterbury Center; two brothers, Robert Bordeaux Jr. of Huntington, Douglas Bordeaux and his wife Regina of Duxbury; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Debbie was predeceased by a son, Jed Provencher.
Memorial services will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Mrs. Bordeaux, Diane, Bob, Doug, and Annette....so very sorry for your family's loss of Deb. As kids, we spent a lot of time together on Woodbury Road, playing in the sandbox, dressing our dolls, and making memories. I'm sure you all have many of your own to help you through this difficult time. My heart and sympathy goes out to all of you.
