David B. Smith David B. Smith, Ed.D., 86, of 4 Seasons Mobile Home Park, Plattsburgh, passed away Monday, July 30, 2018, at Elderwood of Uihlein, Lake Placid. He was born in Syracuse on March 4, 1932, the son of Dr. Charles T. and Elsie (Crabtree) Smith.
D.B., as he liked to be known, grew up in Central New York and has traveled widely. He published a recollection of his early life in the village of Mexico, N.Y., ("My Favorite Fourth of July," Good Old Days Magazine, July, 1995). D.B. has a broad background in life skills and has served as a radio announcer-engineer-supervisor, a police officer, and educational sales/counseling representative (I.C.S.). He earned an M.S. in Education from SUNY Plattsburgh, and a doctorate in education from the University of Sarasota.
Dr. Smith was an assistant professor in education at Lyndon State College, Vermont, and the University of Guam, and an instructor in education at the State University of New York, Potsdam. D.B. has been a teacher, administrator, and a state-level consultant (career education, vocational education, and founding consultant for the Guam Gifted and Talented Program). The author has published over a dozen magazine articles, mostly on computer programming, and two full-length computer text adventure programs, which were sold nationally. He was the major author of Guam's 1977 vocational five-year plan, first Gifted and Talented Program grant. He has written marketing material for a P.O.S. company on Guam, and miscellaneous newspaper articles. He has written an unpublished work on the simplification of parliamentary law.
Survivors include, his son, Dr. Shayn Smith and his wife Laurinda, of Boulder, Colo.; a brother, Dr. Charles L. Smith of Ipswich, Mass.; grandchildren, Jessie Emma Smith of Golden, Colo., and Melanie Rae Smith of Boulder, Colo.; several nieces and nephews.
D.B. was predeceased by his parents, his wife Claudia, and a sister, Evelyn Bergmann.
A funeral service will be held Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018, at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home at 1 p.m., with burial to follow in Riverview Cemetery in Chazy. To share a photo, story, or condolence with D.B.'s family, please visit www.rwwalkerfh.com.
