Bruce R. Shutts


Bruce R. Shutts, 71, of Merrill, died Sunday, April 28, 2019, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born on Feb. 16, 1948, in Chateaugay, New York, he was the son of Mary Shutts.
He was married to Diane LaPoint on Nov. 30, 1968, at the Lyon Mountain Methodist Church by Rev. Latimere.
He graduated from Ellenburg Central School and attended Clinton Community College. He enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged. He was employed by Imperial Wall Coverings, Plattsburgh, retiring after many years of service. He was a communicant of St. Bernard's Church, Lyon Mountain. He was an active member of the Lyon Mountain American Legion Sorrell Post 1623 and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Diane (LaPoint) Shutts of Merrill; two daughters, Stacey (Shutts) LaMountain and her husband, Frank of Chazy Lake, Rebecca (Shutts) Corral and her husband, Joseph of Merrill; a son, Bruce Shutts and his wife, Rebecca (Bonner) of Morrisonville; nephew/son, Nathan Gilmore and his fiancee, Crysten Anslow of Queensbury; grandchildren, Allison LaMountain and her fiance Cody Golovach of Chazy Lake, Hanna Otis of Merrill, Ethan and Emma Shutts of Morrisonville; two great-grandchildren, Lia and Ivan Bruce Golovach of Chazy Lake; five sisters, Ceil Garrow of Plattsburgh, Mary Rita Gilmore of Plattsburgh, Linda (Gilmore) Kalvitis and her husband, Alfred of Chazy, Cindy Gilmore of Dannemora, Brenda (Gilmore) Brown and her husband, Matthew of Merrill; a brother, Paul Gilmore and his wife, Amanda of Merrill; a half-brother, Dennis Jarvis of Arizona; a half-sister, Barbara Jarvis of Boston; nine sisters-in-law, Jeanette Dubrey of Lyon Mountain, Sally Kline of Plattsburgh, Genevieve Mailloux and her husband, Jean of Brainardsville, Judy LaPoint of Chazy Lake, Peggy LaPoint of Chazy Lake, Judy LaPoint of Connecticut, Jackie LaPoint of Merrill, Betty Charland of Merrill; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Lillian Shutts and her husband, Norman (Tiny) Gilmore; his grandfather, Maurice Shutts; a brother, Roger Gilmore, father and mother-in-law, Howard and Bernice (LaFlesh) LaPoint; as well as several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at the Chateaugay Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Bernard's Church, Lyon Mountain on Thursday, May 2 at 11 a.m.
Entombment will take place at Whispering Maples Memorial Gardens, Ellenburg Depot.
Donations in his memory made be made to the Lyon Mountain American Legion Sorrell Post 1623 and the American Cancer Society.

Bruce was a mentor to me when I worked at Econoprint in Plattsburgh. He was someone I always looked up to. He always made work more enjoyable and was a great person. RIP my friend.
