Barbara S. Rock

November 12, 1955 - January 30, 2019

Barbara S. Rock Barbara Smart Rock, 63, of Agnew Road, passed away Jan. 30, 2019.
She was born in Plattsburgh on Nov. 12, 1955, the daughter of Leon and Harriet (LaForest) Smart.
Barbara graduated from Northeastern Clinton Central School in 1973. She graduated from SUNY Canton College in 1975 with an Associate's in Secretarial Science; and went straight to work as a secretary for New York State Electric & Gas. From there, she worked her way up the ladder to First Class UCM apprentice. She was the first woman to qualify and complete that program to First Class Mechanic. After 36 years with NYSEG (also serving as a Union Officer), she retired as the Utility Construction Supervisor. She also held the Chaplin title for the Ladies Auxilary at the American Legion.
She was well respected, admired, and deeply loved amongst her co-workers, friends, and family. Family means the world to her.
She loved riding motorcycles, especially with her big brothers Michael and Gary. She rode to all sorts of motorcycle rallies all around the country with friends (one of them being the infamous Sturgis Rally in 2005). She also loved traveling outside of the U.S.: twice to Italy and Scotland with her sister Cynthia and nieces Sarah and Meghan.
Barbara was a giving, adventurous, selfless, compassionate, and hard-working woman who loved to raise hell and party. Other things she loved were the color red, tequila, wine, flowers in her home, rock 'n' roll, The Dallas Cowboys, The Yankees, shopping, and cars. She was very proud of and took meticulous care of her 1987 baby blue Supra.
She is one of the strongest women we know, and her passing is a shock to everyone who loves and cares about her. She is survived by her husband Stanley Rock of 16 years; sister Cynthia Smart Bell and husband Jeffrey; mother-in-law Pauline Rock; great-aunt Verda Norcross; aunt and uncles (including Godmother Marilyn Laforest Warnock); nieces and nephews Kim, Kyle, Michael Jr., Curtis, Sarah, Casey, and Meghan; stepchildren Katie (Rock) and husband Brent Derocher, Kristie (Rock) and husband Marty Breyette, and Jeremy and fiancee Jessica (Rabideau) Rock; grandchildren Colby, Carsen, Kaiden, Karter, and Sophie; best friends Karen Stiles, Darlene DiBernardo, and Donna Tallman; and many close cousins and friends in New York State, and around the world. She was predeceased by her father and mother Leon and Harriet; and brothers Gary, Michael, and Ronn Smart.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 1, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the R.W. Walker Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Dannemora. I just recently had the briefest chance to meet Barb and she was so delightful. Her positive outlook and love of life filled the room. I feel lucky to have met her and am sorry for her family’s loss. In just one meeting I learned of her travels, her motorcycle trips, and her beloved family. My thoughts are with you all. Barb was a sparkling jewel!

The news sent ripples down my spine. You truly are one of the most wonderful, beautiful giving person I know. Your smile could wipe the frowns off any face. To Barb's family I was part of her NYSEG family and we became friends outside of that network. Stan I was so glad to have met you and so grateful that you came into Barb's life. May you, Barb's family and friends find peace. We were all truly blessed she touched our lives.

I was so shocked and saddened by the news that Barb has passed. My deepest sympathy to Stan, Cindy, and all of Barb's family and extended family.

Barb was voted "best pledge" in the first pledge class for the Delta Sigma Tau sorority at Canton, where we first met, because she took all the harassment with laughter and a grain of salt. She was fun loving and a ray of sunshine for all of us, always a smile. Although I moved from Plattsburgh 38 years ago, not a birthday or Christmas has by without a card and hand written letter from Barb.

You will be missed, my friend. Happy Trails to you on your Harley in the sky.
