Aleksander (Alek) Wolkowicz, passed away peacefully in Montreal Oct. 14, 2017. He was the beloved husband of 62 years of Ruth (Kerkofsky) Wolkowicz.
Alek was born in 1929 in Kalich, Poland, and survived the Lodz (Lodz) Ghetto, Birkenau and Auschwitz concentration camps. He arrived in Canada in 1948 as an refugee orphan sponsored by the Canadian Jewish Congress. He subsequently sponsored his three surviving older brothers and families to immigrate to Canada as well. Despite a lack of formal training, minimal education or understanding of the English or French languages, he worked tirelessly to provide a comfortable home and the opportunities he never received to his four children, Marsha and Avrumel Pepper of Lakewood, N.J., Joel and Marla Wolkowicz of Plattsburgh, Jeffrey and Fay Wolkowicz of Boca Raton, Fla,, and Brian Wolkowicz of Montreal. Also deeply saddened and missing their Zaidie are Kelilah, Ariella, Noah, Nitalya, as well another 14 grandchildren and over 30 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be scheduled at the Temple Beth Israel, 1 Bowman Lane, Plattsburgh.
